Knife maker with open sharpening workshop / Sakai, Osaka
株式会社馬場刃物製作所
Watch edge-finishing craftsmen at their wheels, then test the sharpness yourself.
ABOUT
A maker of traditional Japanese knives that opens its edge-finishing workshop to booked visitors on weekdays.
WHY WE LOVE IT
Sharpening is the stage of a Sakai knife most visitors never see. Baba Hamono opens that room to you.
Baba Hamono makes traditional Japanese knives, from sashimi knives used at sushi counters and long tuna knives to household all-rounders, and opens its edge-finishing workshop to visitors.
A booked visit typically includes an introduction in the showroom, time watching sharpeners work at large rotating whetstones, and a cutting comparison between a Baba knife and an ordinary one. You can buy a knife afterwards. The Sakai tourism bureau sells a one-hour weekday plan, and OSAKA-INFO lists a longer program with sharpening practice and an optional English interpreter.
