Knife wholesaler & knife-finishing experience / Sakai, Osaka
道具屋 和田(株式会社和田商店)
Sharpen and fit the handle of your own Sakai knife with veteran craftsmen.
ABOUT
A Sakai knife wholesaler running hands-on sharpening and handle-fitting sessions in Japanese or English; you take the finished knife home.
WHY WE LOVE IT
In Sakai, the wholesaler is where a forged and sharpened blade becomes a finished knife. Here you do the last steps yourself.
Wada Shoten is a long-established Sakai knife wholesaler. Its knife-finishing session begins with an explanation at the knife museum in nearby Sakai Denshokan (about a 2-minute walk), then moves to a whetstone lesson and handle fitting with craftsmen. The instructors introduced on its website include a sharpener with more than 60 years at the stone.
You choose a household-size santoku, petty, deba or sashimi knife — regular retail stock, not seconds — and take it home. Name engraving on that knife is free if you request it in advance. English sessions include the company's own interpreter.
