A Japanese friend, her friend Hikari, and I set off to explore Ine, a fishing village a few hours from Kyoto. Arriving there felt like stepping into another world: traditional wooden boathouses line the water, and the quiet bay seemed to slow the day down. I’m drawn to traditional places and unexpected discoveries, and Ine felt like both—a place that quickly won my heart.
We continued to Amanohashidate, where a pine-covered sandbar stretches across the sea like a natural bridge. Local legend says that looking at it upside down, through your legs, makes it resemble a dragon rising into the sky. The view was spectacular; it was one of those moments when you simply pause and take it all in.
Then we wandered into the woods to find Kanabiki Falls. The forest paths, the sounds of nature, and the water cascading over the rocks made the detour feel like a little fairytale. It was peaceful and refreshing—a reminder that some lovely places appear when you leave room to explore.
We finished the day with a delicious meal at a quirky little restaurant. Between the scenery, the discoveries, and the time shared with good company, it was exactly the kind of adventure I cherish: a chance to discover the traditional, the unexpected, and another corner of Japan to fall in love with.
